30 Monument Square History

The Charlestown High School built in 1860 on Monument Square. It was an impressive Italianate school with mansard roof. There was a clock above the dormer window that could be seen from all over Monument Square. The school was rebuilt in 1848 with granite and Doric pilasters.
In 1907 a third and grander edifice was constructed at the same site. This building dwarfed its neighborhing townhouses and stood impressively on Monument Square for all to see with its grand design and neo-classic features. Engraved on this gigantic structure were two key construction dates and a title: “MDCCCXLIII (1848) Charlestown High School MDCCCVII (1907). It served as the high school until the 1970s, when a new school was built on Medford Street. The building was then converted by Graham Gund Associations to residential condos in 1986.
Today there are 44 residential units and an underground parking garage to accommodate residents' vehicles.
